The sculptural Textured Tower is a project designed by the practice of Coll-Barreu Arquitectos in 2012 for fire training and it is located in Miribilla, Bilbao, Biscay, Spain, proving that a simple training space can become a ground for experimentation and discovery.

The tower has a height of 32.5 meters and its concrete structure compresses the project with a framework assembled by industrial procedures but covered in handmade external molds. The instruction given were minimal and only as recommendations, so each person could follow their own creative ideas, making the enveloping surface feel alive.

There are several filters to separate the exterior from the interior through apertures and inside the ambiance is very sober since the concrete and galvanized steel are the predominant materials. The designers compared their project with drawing paper on which “we can still see the paper marks, numbers, notes on the concrete surface, it is the place for freedom, for possibility. Paper shows that we are alive.”
